Some Friendships Change, and That’s Okay

Note from Nicki by Nickolene Lurch

One thing adulthood doesn’t really prepare you for is how much friendships can change. Sometimes there isn’t an argument. Nobody betrayed anybody. Nobody needs to be blocked. Life simply changed.

Schedules got fuller. Families grew. Responsibilities shifted. The person you once talked to every day becomes someone you check on every few weeks.

I used to think distance automatically meant something was wrong. Now I understand that some relationships have rhythms.

There are people I may not speak to constantly, but when we reconnect, the love is still there. There are others who were exactly who I needed during a particular chapter, even though life eventually took us in different directions. That doesn’t make what we shared fake. And it doesn’t mean somebody has to become the bad guy.

Of course, some friendships require conversations, and some endings hurt. But every changing relationship doesn’t need an ugly ending. Sometimes you can simply appreciate what was, accept what is, and wish someone well without resentment.

I think that’s one of the quieter signs of maturity. Not every person is meant to walk beside us in exactly the same way forever. But we can still be grateful they walked with us at all.

Until next time, keep flowing on purpose.
