Everybody Doesn’t Know the Whole Me

Note from Nicki by Nickolene Lurch

Something crossed my mind recently: different people know different versions of me. Some know the responsible me. Some know the church me. Some know the silly me who will laugh until I can barely breathe. Others know the me who gets things done, handles what needs to be handled, and keeps moving.

But very few people know all of those versions at once. And I think that’s true for most of us.

People often know us by the role we play in their lives. They know the mother, the friend, the coworker, the leader, the dependable one, the one they call when they need encouragement. But there’s a whole person underneath those roles.

A person who gets tired. Who has dreams that have nothing to do with anybody else. Who can be confident one day and unsure the next. Who loves deeply, laughs loudly, needs quiet sometimes, and is still discovering things about herself.

I used to think being fully known meant everybody needed access to every part of me. I don’t anymore.

Some parts of you belong in certain rooms. Some are reserved for people who have taken the time to know you beyond what you can do for them. And some parts? They’re just between you and God.

There’s something beautiful about knowing that you can be many things and still completely be yourself.

Until next time, keep flowing on purpose.
